Hauraki Adventure

7-day package on the Hauraki Rail Trail

Join us on an awesome week-long adventure taking on one of NZ’s iconic cycle trails! Come and see what the Waikato region has to offer, from the Firth of Thames to historic mining towns and lush farmland – this package is well suited to those wanting to get off the beaten track. This adventure is suitable for all riders from beginners to those with a moderate fitness level.

Day one starts with a pickup from Auckland Airport (or your accommodation), from here we take a scenic drive to the seaside village of Kaiaua. Today’s short 10km ride will give your group the chance to familiarise themselves with the bikes and the trail, and generally blow out a few travel cobwebs. Pass by the Pūkorokoro Shorebird Centre before reaching our overnight stop at the Miranda Holiday Park which has its own thermal hot spring pool – just perfect for a relaxing soak.

Day two continue along the Hauraki Rail Trail enjoying expansive views of coastal wetlands, farmland and the volcanic Coromandel Ranges towards the historic town of Thames. This 45km section will really get the legs warmed up as you follow the coastline before heading north at the old Kopu Bridge. Accommodation is at the charming Lady Bowen B&B built in 1868, and Thames provides plenty of dining options.

Day three dawns and ahead of you is the 34km stage from Thames to Paeroa. Along the way the Matatoki Cheese Barn is a highlight, as is the Historical Maritime Park (once New Zealand’s most inland port). Paeroa is home to the iconic Kiwi softdrink ‘L&P’ as well as many antiques and collectables shops. Enjoy a 2-night stay at the comfortable Pedlars Motel next to the Ohinemuri River.

Day four is the hero day on the Hauraki Rail Trail with plenty of extra activities to keep you busy. Our shuttle will drop you at Waikino Station to catch a ride on the heritage railway to Waihi where you can visit the operational Martha Mine and the Gold Discovery Centre. The 24km trail follows the incredible Karangahake Gorge including the cascading Owharoa waterfall, photogenic gold mining sites, the Victoria Battery museum, and the infamous Windows Walkway which is a real must-do. Another absolute highlight is riding through an amazing 1100-metre long railway tunnel, before returning to Paeroa.

Day five has you riding the easy 23km journey down to the quaint town of Te Aroha nestled at the foot of the Kaimai Range. The town is famous for its Victorian-era mineral spas, renowned for their healing properties since the 1800s. There are some excellent walking tracks nearby, and the helpful staff at the local I-site are happy to give you a few pointers. Accommodation is at the Te Aroha Motel.

Day six is the final day on the Hauraki Rail Trail, a gentle 37km section which passes through fertile plains, significant horse studs, goat farms, groves of scented trees, the scenic Wairere Falls, Stanley Landing and the Firth Tower before reaching the finish line in Matamata. Congratulations are in order – you have just completed an epic journey of almost 200kms! Our shuttle will meet you next to the iconic Hobbiton inspired I-site and will transport your group to the fabulous Lakeview Lodge. Settle in and enjoy a delicious gourmet dinner accompanied by panoramic vistas over beautiful Lake Karapiro… heavenly!

Day seven is a free day to experience and enjoy some of the nearby local attractions including Hobbiton, the Blue Springs walkway, Sanctuary Mountain, Camjet, Stonehill Horse Treks etc. Keep some energy in reserve for our incredible guided kayak glow worm tour this evening, a truly unique way to cap off a great adventure.
